Get out while you can

Like most commenters, I believe the only reasonable choice in my hypothetical is to get out of the country as fast as possible while you still can. The other options don't hold much promise. Civil war is a brutal power struggle, hardly something to make people freer. To quote David Friedman, revolution is the hell of it. A coup may be possible, but only if the majority is on your side, which in this case it's not, unless you're willing to enact a totalitarian regime to keep the majority quiet.

I'm suprised nobody picked up/commented on the story that inspired the hypothetical: the death of Augusto Pinochet. Under his predecessor Salvador Allende, Chile underwent nationalization of several industries, price-fixing, and takeover of foreign mining companies. Allende's reforms sent the economy to ruin with hyperinflation and multi-year GDP contraction. His government trampled on the rights of property owners and the constitution. With Soviet backing and and admiration for Fidel Castro, a reasonable person could have concluded in early 1973 that Chile was on the same path as Cuba. What to do?

Pinochet managed a coup and overthrow of the Allende government. But as the Onion interviewee Colin Gimeno states, "At least he kept communism out of the country the only way a Fascist, bloodthirsty dictator could". An AP article notes, "According to an official report, 3,197 people were killed for political reasons in the 17 years after Pinochet overthrew Allende in the Sept. 11, 1973, coup. More than 30,000 were tortured, many more illegally imprisoned and thousands were forced into exile." Yet, looking at modern day Cuba and Chile, it's possible for me to believe that Chile is better for the bastard they got than for the bastard they didn't.

As Michael Sullivan comments below, I don't think there's an attractive place to immigrate to today in comparison to the US. Economic freedom is probably the most important factor for me, with cultural factors following right behind. Singapore is attractive in that regard, though the People's Action Party is too authoritarian for my tastes. Other places in East Asia with a high level of economic freedom seem like socio-culturally closed-societies. I know many people have talked about Costa Rica, but I don't see the appeal. I wouldn't move to a small island nation/tax haven; too many unknowns.

The ideal place to immigrate to would have been Hong Kong under British rule - possibly the most capitalist city in history, Anglosphere culture of rule of law and property rights, English-speaking, minimal government, entrepreneurs under every nook and cranny, and as a perk, hot Chinese women - but is no longer an option under Chinese rule. If commies were taking over the US and I had to pick one country today, I'd probably go with Ireland - high degree of economic freedom, English-speaking, and I've visited before. Seemed like a nice place.

Follow-up: Where would you go?
